Pellaea atropurpurea
12th September 2006
Cool blue green pinnules and jet black stems , I was worried about its hardiness, so it went into the greenhouse for winter, but it lost a lot of leaves, and it has done far better outside
(although there is a risk that a hard frost will do away with it completely).
Native to North and Central America, from New England to Guatemala, though it is rare in the north. It grows on calcareous rock in habitat, and my garden is probably too acidic for it in the long term.

Last year I kept it rather dry, fearing that winter would carry it off if it was wet. This year I have kept it wetter, and it has grown more vigorously
and I think that probably means it will withstand the winter better. The blue-green fronds are beconing more striking as the plant matures.
