Phygelius x rectus 'Yapor' SOMERFORD FUNFAIR ORANGE
6th September 2013
The SOMERFORD FUNFAIR series of Phygelius x rectus were raised by F.C. Yates at Somerford Nursery in Cheshire. He has selected plants
that are compact and well branched.
'Yapor' was one of the first three cultivars, all introduced in 2005. It was raised by crossing P.capensis with a particularly compact
yellow flowered plant of P.aequalis. The orange flowers are held above the foliage on deep reddish stems.
I have been quite impressed by the SOMERFORD FANFAIR series. They were very heavily pushed on the market when they were introduced
and some retailers were making unrealistic promises about their size. I was predisposed to think it was all a load of nonsense
but this one has flowered freely throughout the summer and autumn on a reasonably compact plant. It isn't a lot smaller than the typical form but it
branches well and has stood up to the wind without damage.
