Pieris taiwanensis

Archive entry 12.03.23

6th May 2007

Under my conditions, this has the brightest red new growth of the species I grow. It is an extraordinary synthetic cerise red, like some strange plastic offcuts from a manufacturer of Christmas ornaments. Unfortunately, it also has a rather yellowish tone to the old growth as the new growth emerges which is , in brief, not good.
Native to the mountains of Taiwan where it grows at altitudes from 6,000 to 11,000ft. Closely allied to P. japonica, plants in cultivation seem to be larger, brighter and with more open growth. Introduced by Wilson in 1918 and awarded a First Class Certificate in 1923 by the RHS.
