Pitcairnia is a genus of terrestrial bromeliads some of which are a little bit hardy, many of which are not.
I knew nothing about this one when I bought it, as is often the way. Now I know it comes from Ecuador
where it grows in moist subtropical forest. Doesn't sound like Cornwall, does it!
Summer in the greenhouse demonstrated that it liked water - it sulked until I started to drown it regularly.
On the plus side, there are reports of it surviving outside on the south coast so I might try a division in the greenhouse.
