Platycerium bifurcatum

The Staghorn fern is growing slowly in the cold greenhouse, so it seems to tolerate low temperatures, as long as it is allowed to dry out properly. Unfortunately it suffers badly if there is a serious radiation frost, the fronds get damaged and it takes the plants a long time to recover. I try to cover them now if cold weather is threatened.

The species is found in eastern Australia, in New South Wales and Queensland. The southern populations should experience some cold weather and possibly frost, so it should stand a good chance of growing in a cold greenhouse here where the summer temperature rises high enough to promote good growth. It also grows in Java and New Guinea, which is less good news and, following my standard policy, I am going to ignnore it.
I grow it in an ordinary compost although it grows naturally as an epiphyte. In my experience it is too difficult to keep it moist enough when grown under more extreme conditions.
I have only seen one attempt to grow it outside, the plant did not survive for long. It has naturalised in south Florida, which is about one climate zone too tender for me , though I think it is summer heat and the length of the effective growing season that make the difference.
