Polylepis australis

23rd November 2013

A large shrub or small tree endemic to the Andes in Argentina, growing at altitudes up to 2880m. As it matures it produces a loose covering of papery bark that is thought to offer protection from low temperatures.
The first time I saw it I thought it was a monster Potentilla but I learnt better. It took a while to find one but now it is growing (rather rapidly) at the top of the garden. It doesn't do much but it does it with panache.

The Beast from the East killed it in March, though it has taken me this long to accept the fact.
