Prinsepia utilis

5th July 2014 31st December 2016 31st December 2016
A prickly shrub or small tree, found in the wild from the Himalayas in northern Pakistan through to south China. In habitat it produces sweet, cherry-like fruits in June. It can grow in moist soils and light shade, so I wanted to try it in the garden. Most importantly, I wanted it because it flowers very early in the winter before most plants have quite finished with autumn (in colder parts of the country it flowers in January or February). The flowers are barely scented and not spectacular, but they appear when there is nothing else like them in flower.
I grew it for a couple of years but left it in a pot for too long and it died before I could plant it out. If I see another then I will replace it.
