My favourite of the Japanese cherries, though it is the commonest. Makes an upright funnel shaped tree covered with large pink flowers in May.

Given an Award of Garden Merit by the RHS in 1993, reconfirmed in 2012. In the write-up the forum panel said:

" 'Kanzan' was once incorrectly known as 'Hizazakura' and is sometimes found under the names 'Sekiyama' and 'Kwanzan'. Imported from Japan about 1900."

My trees are becoming quite elderly now. Although 'Kanzan' is a tough old bird, it isn't expected to reach a great age in the garden here. The climate is too wet and windy for it to be entirely happy. However it continues, despite the occasional fungal disease. It hasn't succumbed to silver-leaf (Chondrostereum purpureum) disease which is a little surprising. Silver-leaf is a trying pestilence that usually infects stone fruits here within about a decade. Perhaps it has been protected by the fact that I never prune the trees.
I say that it continues here - actually one remains of the five I planted in about 1985.
