Primula allionii 'Aries Violet'

2nd March 2020 6th March 2021 10th March 2023
I have always struggled to keep the smaller Primula alive and now I have a growing regime that seems to work I am going slightly mad for them. So 'Aries Violet' was an inevitable purchase when I saw it on Hartside Nursery's stall at the AGS show in Theydon Bois. Their label says:

"Choice form of Primula allionii. Stunning rich mauve flowers with very small eye. Alpine house. Needs winter protection."

For me it has been vigorous and floriferous. The buds are violet on the exterior but the open flower is a blue-tinged dark pink.

Philip Bankhead at Peninsula Primulas says:

"The neat mounds of foliage carry the flower stems at just 5cm tall with violet mauve flowers with very small eye. This beautiful allionii alpine variety is a vigorous plant which requires cold greenhouse conditions."
