Primula bhutanica 'Sherriff's Variety'

Archive entry 21.04.19

A very beautiful blue flowered Petiolaris Primula. They have a reputation for being difficult in cultivation in the south of the UK. They prosper more readily in the north. Cold winters, high summer humidity or some other factor is at work. I bought this from Hartside Nursery (Cumbria) because I was convinced that I was clever enough so overcome the problems in a cool, shaded alpine house. In the event I was wrong.
The species comes from East Bhutan and West Assam with a disjunct population in south-east Tibet. It is found growing on steep banks and streamsides in Rhododendron forest. Primula bhutanica 'Sherriff's Variety' is derived from a collection by Ludlow and Sherriff under the number L&S.2864 in the 1930s.
