Primula vialii is a wonderful plant though not very variable. Suddenly this white flowered form appeared on the market and I wanted to try it.
It is a single clone that has been micropropagated to make it widely available. I had a vague idea of using a plant of the usual form to get seed,
and then raising the F2 generation to get a seed strain that would breed true. The plan was to grow an astonishing field of them but I dithered
and the original plant expired after a couple of years. Writing in the Journal of the Alpine Garden Society, John Fitzpatrick says: "Harperley Hall showed for the first time a white form of Primula vialii. It arose by chance in the Northumberland garden of John Holland, who named it for his daughter-in-law, Alison. [...] Harperley Hall has micro-propagated the Primula to make a quantity of stock available." |
