I have always assumed that the forms of Pteris cretica will be too tender to survive here, even in the greenhouse, but in recent years a couple have prospered
with the minimum protection. It inspired me to try 'Albolineata', which is usually sold as a house plant. It has done well in the greenhouse for a year
(I bought it from Morrisons for £1.19). This variety has broad fronds as a young plant that get thinner as the plant matures. They have wide silver marks along the midrib. Paul Barney (Edulis) says: "Evergreen clump forming fern with shiny green fronds and cream band running down the middle. Native to Japan. Hardy to minus 8 but is deciduous below minus 3. Sheltered position. Also suitable for indoor culture." I have never been entirely happy with the broad fronded rather moderate sized plants from Japan being conspecific with the much narrower fronded plants from Europe. The Japanese plants have now been split as P. parkeri which makes sense but leaves a question over the proper name for this broad fronded taxon. |

At the end of 2023 some plants with bright red shaded fronds came onto the market under the name MAKE UPZ ROZE. I had some doubts but the plant was too good to ignore.
It rapidly became clear that the plants had been dyed, new growth developed in the typical green shades.
