Puya coerulea var. violacea

Archive entry 10.05.20

A prickly bromeliad that I bought as a seedling and have kept, despite regular injury and some doubt over its identity, simply for the beauty of it hairy leaves. It has now flowered and deserves better than a small pot tucked out of the way in the greenhouse.
A variety of the species with purple-black flowers. It produced a flower spike in a pot and I was too slow getting it into the ground. The flowering rosette died without producing an offset.
