I was given a piee of the Australian rock felt fern but unfortunately I didn't get it to establish in a pot. I'm not sure what I did wrong, it just dropped its fronds and died. In habitat it covers a wide range including all of eastern Australia. Plants of the World online says: "The native range of this species is New Guinea to Victoria, Norfolk Island. It grows primarily in the wet tropical biome." Writing about ferns in the Canberra region, David Nicholls says: "Pyrrosia rupestris is a curious little scrambling fern that grows over rocks and on tree trunks often in quite exposed areas. The fronds have a succulent appearance. The fertile fronds are elongated, and up to 8cm in length, while the sterile fronds are often nearly circular and typically up to 2cm across. It can form quite dense clumps. The fern is reported to be very easy to grow and hardy in most situations. This plant, not a Canberra region specimen, was growing within 20 meters of an inlet from the sea." |
