A splendid large leaved Oak from China, Japan and Korea. I was given this one as a sapling and it is growing slowly in a pot
in the Hedychium house. Eventually it will grow large enough to plant outside. In it's natural habitat it
can grow up to 20m tall but those I have seen in the UK are barely half that. Fortunately it is most impressive as a young plant
, as it matures the leaves appear smaller. Trees and Shrubs online says: "Native of Japan and of the mainland of N.E. Asia; introduced to Europe in 1830. It is a remarkable oak on account of its enormous leaves, but has never been really a success in this country, and is usually short-lived. Its habit is thin and gaunt. The undersurface of its leaves sometimes presents an extraordinary appearance because of an infestation of disk-like galls, so thickly placed as to overlap each other." My plant is now growing in the garden but I think it would prefer a warmer summer climate. The new growth in spring grows well but I don't think it ripens enough to get through the winter reliably. This year (2024) it has grown to about 1m tall and I am hoping that the new growth will persist this time. I had the same problem with Quercus robur 'Concordia'. |
