There are a number of colour variations of the Creeping Buttercup. This one opens yellow, but the flowers rapidly turn white with yellow streaks. Im most yellow buttecups, the yellow pigment is
contained in a layer of cells on the top surface of the petals where it is easily broken down, leaving the white background showing. I got it from Rosemary Castle at Alternatives who named and introduced it. Her catalogue says: "An interesting form of creeping buttercup with rather small variegated flowers: the petals are white streaked with rich yellow. Normal foliage and habit, but less vigorous." I haven't seen it in the garden for several years, but it may still persist unnoticed. |
