x Ramberlea 'Inchgarth'

A fascinating hybrid that I bought from Aberconwy Nursery. I had long wondered if the cross between Ramonda and Haberlea was possible and I was surprised (and delighted) to find plants available for sale. The label says:

"Choice and rare intergeneric hybrid between Ramonda and Haberlea. Intermediate between the parents with large pale lilac tubular flowers with a yellow throat. Conditions as for the parents. Raised by the late Brian Wilson and his wife Maureen in Aberdeenshire."

Researching the hybrid, I discovered that it had been written up by the Wilsons in 2001. They used the pollen of Haberlea ferdinandi-coburgii 'Connie Davidson' on the flower of Ramonda myconii. They repeated the hybrid over several years before they got fertile hybrid seed, which was sown in September 1996.

The entry in the International Gesneriad Register says:

"xRamberlea 'Inchgarth'. 2000, IR00734, Maureen & Brian Wilson, Scotland, UK. (Ramonda myconi x Haberlea ferdinandi-coburgii 'Connie Davidson'). Cross made May, 1996, planted Aug. 1996, first flowered May 1999. Plants sterile and reproducible only vegetatively. Compact, basal rosette, blooming in second year from seed. Leaves smooth with sparse hairs, mid-green, 6.0-6.5 cm long, 3.8-4.2 cm wide with about 2 cm petiole, ovate to elliptic with serrate edges, acute tip and cuneate base. Calyx semi-fused, green brown, 7-8 mm long. 4 flowers per scape, peduncle 4.5 cm, pedicel 2.0 cm. Corolla semi-campanulate, 1.8 cm long x 2.6 cm wide, mid violet suffused white. No equivalent plants in cultivation, compared with siblings, this is superior in growth and flower production to date, yellower in throat.
