Rheum palmatum 'Atrosanguineum'

25th May 2013 24th April 2014
A large growing species that grew like a monster behind the barn for a decade, where the soil was moist and fertile. It had blocked the access, it had to go. I potted dozens of divisions but they don't like pots for long and they were all dead before I found a suitable new spot.
Time passes and a friend has given me another, prospering but not yet magnificent.
In the fullness of time I have been forced to accept that this garden is not really suited to rhubarb. Shrubs and trees are continually overgrowing things and it is difficult to keep enough ground clear for lasrge herbaceous plants to succeed in the long term.

Crug Farm Plants say:

"Large perennial with very large lobed leaves, deep red-purple when young. Bears tall fluffy panicles of crimson flowers in May-June. Height and spread 3m. sun or shade providing the soil is rich and moist. Good on heavy soils."
