I was given a cutting of this lovely 'leafy' cactus last year and it has grown well. Unfortunately it
comes from the lowland forests of Brazil and is not particularly tolerant of low temperatures. It will be safe here as long as I remember to bring it indoors in the autumn. The Foliage Factory gives a good description: "Rhipsalis elliptica G.Lindb. ex K.Schum. is a much-branched cactus with pendent, segmented, dark green branches often tinged magenta to purple. The stems grow up to 2 m long. Basal branches are usually 3-winged and up to 35 cm ong. The branch segments are mostly flattened, more or less elliptic, with round-toothed margins, up to 18 cm long and 8.5 cm wide. Flowers are small with yellowish, widely spreading petals, numerous white filaments, and white stigma-lobe. Plants of the World online says: "The native range of this species is Brazil (Minas Gerais to Santa Catarina). It is a succulent epiphyte and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome." |
