I am a bit ignorant on the Rhododendron front, they have never really impressed me. To be fair to them, I did all my growing up with Rhododendron on a heavy yellow clay,
where they hardly prospered. This one arrived here when I felt I needed more evergreen bulk in some of the plantings, and it has flowered as well! It was getting rather cramped where I had it planted so in 2011 it was lifted and moved. It seems to have established in the new location (moister, more light) and I am expecting it to fill out a bit. A R. cawbiense hybrid raised by J.C. van Tol sometime before 1929. The International Rhododendron Register says: "Fls up to 20/truss, 50 x 60mm, funnel shaped, carmine rose, with a lighter, green spotted dorsal blotch. Calyx small. Lvs obovate, up to 135 x 60mm, deep green above. Shrub to at least 3.0m." My plant doesn't entirely match the description in flower. |
