One of a trio of Vireys rhododendrons that I bought from Glendoick while they were available. I have always wanted to try Vireyas and always assumed they would be too fragile for my challenging conditions.
That may still be true, but so far things are looking good. Flowers in the first year were not expected. I would be lying if I said I hadn't hoped but only in that mad way that you hope to win the lottery
(especially when you haven't bought a ticket) or you hope to turn into a turtle on a summer day when the sea looks inviting. Anyway, the Rhododendron came true. 'Glendoick Papaya' seems to have a longer and more flared tube that 'Papaya' which I have seen at Exbury and which is rather flat faced (and flowering in October). The Glendoick website says: "The only Glendoick Vireya hybrid, made by Kenneth Cox. Masses of small orange flowers on a compact small leaved plant. One of the easier to please. (acrophilum x Javanicum.)" |
