An early flowering hybrid raised by I.Davies in 1855.
R. ciliatum x R. dauricum. I have admired this for years in other peoples gardens, one of the first hybrids to flower in early February and lasting into March. I have finally planted one and look forward to an improving display every year adding colour behind the snowdrops. The International Rhododendron Register says: "Fls 2-4/truss (but several of these clustered at branch tips), broadly funnel-shaped 25 x 40-45mm, purplish crimson in bud, opening rosy purple and without markings, darker on the outside. Calyx lobes 1-2mm long, ciliate. Lvs ovate, 20-60 x 15-27mm, evergteen or partially so, dark, shiny green above, scaly below. Shrub c1.2m. FCC 1978 (There were probably several similar seedlings from the original cross, a redder form has been described as var rubrum Watson). |
