There are plenty of tender Rhododendron to choose from, and I was feeling like trying something
reckless. I want to grow some of the Vireya species but I thought I should have a go at something less expensive
before I start burning money.
R.simsii comes in a number of extravagant cultivars grown as flowering houseplants. Most of them are produced by
the Dutch and most of them will be dead shortly after flowering. I am hoping that this one will at least make it
through the summer. I know it is tender, but I have never tested what that means in this case. I am growing it in
the Hedychium house where it will get some winter protection, light shade and summer warmth. I will be curiously
happy if it survives the winter.
In the end it survived the first winter but was killed by the second.
