A big red azalea. I am very fond of them, and I still seem to find new ones to plant. This is one of the Gable hybrids, raised by Joseph Gable in Stewartstown, Pennsylvania. In his FuturePlantsBlog, Randy Stewart says: "Reaching up to 5 x 4 feet in 10 years and eventually up to 8 x 6 feet. Fast growing, as much as 15 inches poer year have been recorded. The flowers are scarlet red and up to 2 inches across and the foliage also turns a rich wine colour in winter. Early blooming, sun tolerant and cold hardy down to -20F makes this a choice azalea." The International Rhododendron Register says: "Evergreen azalea:parentage unknown. Raised: J.B. Gable. Introduced: J.B. Gable (1952). Flowers 2/compact truss, open funnel-shaped, 30 x 25mm, moderate red (47A), with a slight flush of strong reddish orange (42B) along lower midribs in the throat, faint spotting of strong red (53B) on ventral lobe. Lvs 20 x 25mm, glossy green, tinged red, becoming wine red in winter. Shrub up to 1.0m. HC 1971, AM 1075. (Mis-spelt in some early publications, the name is derived from Stewartstown (Pennsylvania USA))." |
