I have had it in the garden for a long time but it is only in the last few years that I have been confident distinguishing 'Vuyk's Rosyred' from 'Vuyk's Scarlet'.
In most years this one flowers about a week earlier than 'Vuyk's Scarlet'. There is also a slight difference in the colour of the flowers but they need to be compared side-by-side
to see it. Awarded an FCC by the RHS in 1988 after trial, the write-up in the proceedings says: "'Vuyk's Rosy Red' (vuykiana hybrid) FCC 20 May 1988. (Raised by Messrs. Vuyk van Nes: introduced and sent by by Slocock Nurseries, Barrs Lane, Knaphill, Woking, Surrey.) Plant 45cxm high, 178cm spread, vigorous spreading habit; free flowering; leaves 2.5cm long. 1.3cm wide, dark glossy green. Flower truss fairly compact, 2 flowers per truss; corolla 6cm diameter, 4cm long, openly campanulate shaped, margins waved, brighter but nearest to Red-Purple group 57D, throat speckled with Red Group 45A. No scent. Flowering from 6 may 1988." The International Rhododendron Register says: "'Vuyk's Rosyred'. Evergreen azalea, parentage unknown. Introduced: Vuyk van Nes (1954). Fls 2/truss, open funnel-shaped, 40 x 70mm, deep purplish pink (55A), with dorsal spotting of deep red (53A). Shrub 0.6m, AM 1962 FCC 1988." The published descriptions imply that you could distinguish the two cultivars by using the RHS colour chart. If you are going to try it I suggest you also take a large bottle of whisky with you to numb the pain and act as a scapegoat. |
