I first met 'Vuyk's Scarlet' as a flowering pot plant, produced by the Dutch in vast numbers. It has slowly escaped to
join the ranks of evergreen azaleas in the garden and its place in mass production has been taken by the more
compact R.simsii cultivars. Compact with very large flowers, it can look a little bit artificial outside. Raised by Aart Vuyk of Vuyk van Nes Nursery in Boskoop, Holland in the early 1950's. The International Rhododendron Register says: "Evergreen azalea, parentage unknown. Introduced; Vuyk van Nes (1954). Fls 1-2/truss, funnel shaped, 45 x 55mm, with wavy edged lobes, crimson (22-22/1), with darker spots towards base of throat. Lvs 27 x 15mm, dark and glossy green above. Dwarf shrub. AM 1959, FCC 1966." It has also been awarded the AGM in 1969, confirmed in 2002 and 2012. |
