When I moved into this garden I was convinced I could do anything. I had never had so much space to work with.
More importantly, I had never had so much space to fill. I put in some fruit trees, some strawberries, rhubarb
and all sorts of delicious ideas. I also planted a couple of rows of Blackcurrants. I'm not sure why,
I don't really like them but I do love the smell of the leaves. Years fly by and I don't recall ever harvesting any currants from them but here they still are, old and shaded by trees. I don't expect fruit but perhaps I will take some cuttings and plant another row in the sun, for old times sake. In the end I just grubbed them out, along with the trees shading them, and made a new border. It seems that cosy nostalgia is no match for a new adventure in reckless planting! As Trees and Shrubs online says: "Native of Europe and Siberia, possibly of Britain. Several varieties of this species – so well known as the “black currant” of fruit gardens – have been distinguished. The two first mentioned ('Dissectum' and 'Laciniatum') are curious and interesting, but no others are worth cultivating as ornamental shrubs:" |
