I was looking for a plant of R.aesculifolia var. henricii when I came upon this. It was raised from seed collected
from the real plant but it was open pollinated and Rodgersia aren't very particular (I think even I would stand a chance
on a dark night after a pint of cider). It is still small but I am not expecting great things from it. The true plant has the veins sunk into the top surface of the leaf which adds texture to the appearance. It also has and extra leaflet or two compared with the type variety which extends the leaf along its axis and reduces the similaritywith Aesculus. For what it's worth, the plant came with a label that says: "Hardy clump-forming perennial for waterside planting with bright red stalks, pink-red flowers in summer, and bronze-green foliage. Height to 90cms. Plant in moist soil in sun and part-shade." |
