Rosa Rosa 'Frantasia' RHAPSODY IN BLUE

25th June 2006 6th June 2006 4th June 2006
A very modern hybrid, with good disease resistance. It is an odd colour, but I haven't grown to hate it, which is a good sign. It was 'Rose of the Year' in 2003.

The RHS description says:

"Iridescent purple, sweetly scented flowers that fade to slate blue from July to September. A new variety that is the closest yet to a blue rose and has already created a great deal of excitement around the world in rose trials. It is a tall, bushy shrub that repeat flowers well and is very healthy."

A very interesting plant because although it was introduced as a novelty it has persisted in cultivation and shown itself to be vigorous and disease free.

Ashridge Trees say:

"Bred by the amateur grower Frank R. Cowlishaw of Derby in the late 1990's and first sold by Warner's Roses, Devon, in 2000.
The seed parent was Summer Wine, a Kordes rose, and the pollen parent was a hybrid of International Herald Tribune crossed with a Blue Moon & Montezuma hybrid and a Violacea & Montezuma hybrid.
It was RHS rose of the year 2003, won a gold medal at the 1999 Royal National Rose Society Show, and was named best shrub rose at the 2018 New Zealand Rose Trials. "
