A charming alpine that I bought from a garden centre becuse it was too good to leave behind. I have grown it in a very sharp draining mix,
latterly in pure limestone chipping, and it has stayed in character though grown very slowly. It is in the greenhouse because I think
it would get too wet outside. The species received an Award of Merit from the RHS in 1985 when exhiited by the Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Plants of the World says of the species: "The native range of this species is E. Türkiye to Iran. It is a succulent subshrub and grows primarily in the temperate biome. It is has environmental uses and as a medicine." The subspecies R.s.glaucphylla is restricted to Türkiye. The RHS say: "A clump-forming succulent with pale bluish-green, fleshy, spoon-shaped leaves forming flattened rosettes up to 8cm across. Open sprays of deep pink, star-shaped flowers are produced on upright stems in summer". |
