A vigorous variety with thin white streaks running through the leaves. It grows rapidly and divides very freely in a pot.
The picture also shows the unspectacular (but smelly) flowers. I got plants from both Monksilver Nursery and Cotswold Garden Flowers. It has been in the greenhouse, out into the garden, back into the greenhouse, into the Hedychium house and so on. I still haven't found quite the right place for it. The Cotswold Garden Flowers label said: "Vigorous dwarf form, creamy-white streaked dark green evergreen leaves, 15cm. Good for dry shade." Plant Delights Nursery say: "Rohdea 'Gunjaku' is essentially a larger version of Rohdea 'Mure Suzume', if not the same clone. Each thick, evergreen leaf is frosted with longitudinal white streaks which coalesce to form an interesting creamy white border. When mature, expect a 10" tall x 15" wide clump, topped with short stalks of red berries in winter. Rohdea 'Gunjaku' is perfect for a dry shade site where nothing else will grow." I'm not so convinced about the dry shade comments, at least not in this garden. I find that if it is dry in the summer it hardly grows at all, it needs moisture through the summer months if it is to be vigorous. |
