Rohdea japonica 'Mure Suzumi'

A vigorous cultivar with white frosted stripes, concentrated towards the tips and margins of the leaves. I find that it flowers easily and produces plenty of bright red berries in winter. It is quite hardy, but the leaves are so long lasting and slow growing that it is a pity to risk frost damage to them. I grow it in a pot in a shady greenhouse where the frost doesn't reach it.

I got it from Plant Delights Nursery in North Carolina. Their catalogue says:

"Like a miniature evergreen hosta, this dwarf but vigorously growing rohdea makes small rosettes, to 6" wide x 4" tall, of narrow green leaves with white streaking that intensifies toward the edges of the leaf. Established clumps of R. 'Mure Suzume', which translates to "flock of sparrows", will produce short stalks of bright red berries in late fall...a limited collector's edition (not associated with the Franklin Mint) plant for a special site in the woodland garden."
