Arrived from Crug Farm Plants under the name Tupistra aurantiaca also known as Camplylandra aurantiaca. Quite fascinating.
Rohdea is a barely known genus of leafy delights, and this is one of the more obscure ones.
I love the comfortable arching clumps of leaves, and it has been vigorous and divided freely.
Introduced to cultivation in 1994 by Bleddyn and Sue Wynn-Jones from Sikkim under their number BSWJ.2401. It has grown well for me in moist shady conditions and flowered well, but it hasn't set seed yet. I have just obtained a little friend for it, that I hope is a different clone, in case it needs that special encouragement that only a toy-boy can offer! Crug Farm Plants description says: "Tuberous/rhizomatous rooted perennial, growing into a tufted clump of strap shaped leaves, bearing a pungent spike of grey-green flowers in spring, followed by elliptic orange-red berries. One of our new introductions from the forests of Sikkim which we collected in 1994." Plants of the World online says: "The native range of this species is Central Himalaya to China (SW. Sichuan, NW. Yunnan). It is a perennial or rhizomatous geophyte and grows primarily in the temperate biome." |
