Rohdea wattii BSWJ.8297

A fun little plant. Arrived this morning in full smelly flower.
Collected as seed in north Vietnam by the Wynn-Jones' at Crug Farm Plants. It is probably worth noting that none of these plants like too much cold!

Crug Farm Plants say:

"An unusually small species with broad dark glossy green clasping foliage more reminiscent of Aspidistra. Which we collected seed from a moist narrow shelf above a river within the ancient forest on Phan Si Pan, North Vietnam. Where the small rosette-forming plant bore a spike of red fruit at 2200m in 2000. Easily grown in full to part shade in a well drained lime-free soil which has plenty of humus incorporated. Protect from severe cold."

Under the name Campylandra wattii Plant Delights Nursery says:

" Campylandra wattii is a perennial that few people have ever encountered, but you may know its close cousins, aspidistra and rohdea. To our knowledge, Campylandra wattii is one of the only winter-hardy members of the genus, surviving for us since 2007, with winter lows of 7 degrees F. In the wild Campylandra wattii can be found at elevations up to 9,000' in Southern China, Bhutan, and India, where it grows in moist, densely shaded forests. In the garden, Campylandra wattii forms an often solitary, finger-sized, upright stalk, ending in 2-3 terminal evergreen leaves. The small rohdea-like flower spike adorns the clump in late winter/early spring. This is a true bio plant (botanical interest only), but one that collectors of the unusual won't want to be without."
