Roscoea alpina CC.1820

This is a form of Roscoea alpina from the Almora Hills in Uttar Pradesh, collected and distributed by Chris Chadwell. It is quite typical in all its features and makes a good garden plant.

I got it from Beeches Nursery, their labels says:

"Wild collected seed from Chris Chadwell. From the Kumaon Mountains in Uttar Pradesh. This has intense violet-purple hooded flowers in whorls atop fleshy stems. Arching sheathing linear leaves. Fertile, humus rich leafy soil in a sheltered spot. (6-8), 20cm."

Writing in the Bulletin of the Alpine Garden Society, Gary Dunlop says:

"The Chris Chadwell collection CC.1820, made in Uttar Pradesh, is distinct in that the initial foliage is broad rather than narrow and is presented almost horizontally rather than upright, though the subsequent foliage is more typical. It increases vegetatively, which is unusual for the species, though there is a pink form of similar habit, which has been in cultivation for quite a few years, but without provenance."
