Roscoea alpina short form

A selection of the species. It starts flowering almost at ground level at the start of the season but gets taller as the year goes on. I got it from Crug Farm Plants, their catalogue says:

"A Himalayan member of the ginger family, having a fleshy root, with short stems 10-20cm of glossy lanceolate clasping leaves, bearing pink hooded flowers not long after emerging, late May-July. Plant the fleshy roots 15cm deep, in a well drained humusy soil, in part sun-shade."
