Roscoea cautleyoides 'Reinier' is a slender growing form, the flowers have a good broad labellum. It is supposed to flower as soon as the shoots emerge from the ground,
but over the last couple of years it has delayed flowering until June on tall wiry stems. I got it from Long Acre Plants. Their catalogue says: "A clear yellow form of this early spring flowering tuberous woodland perennial" (ie they had only just got them in and didn't quite know what to expect). Paul Christian said (2005): "Lovely slender stems eventually reach 25cm tall although flowering starts almost as soon as the shots start to emerge from the ground. The flowers are of good substnce with a wide lip of intense yellow colouration, subtly infused with a hint of green. Again awarded by the KAVB in 1998, and incidentally the name is palindromic!" Crug Farm Plants say: "An early flowering form of the species originating from Sichuan and Yunnan, with upright stems stretching to 60cm tall after flowering, bearing 3-4 narrow leaves to 30cm long, with stem-clasping bases. Terminating in an extending inflorescence of larger yellow-green stained orchid-iris-like flowers form early May to August. Easily grown in any type of fertile drained soil in sun or part shade. |
