Roscoea (cautleyoides x purpurea)

During 2006 I produced a number of Roscoea hybrids as an informal trial to see what was possible. There are only a very few hybrids available commercially but there seems to be potential for a great many more. I made the hybrid between R. cautleyoides and R. purpurea a couple of times but ran out of time to take it any further.
Once I became familiar with the unique morphology of Roscoea flowers (get a magnifying glass and pull a few flowers apart) pollination was fairly simple to achieve. The flowers don't need to be emasculated (which woud be a challenge) because the flowers seem to out-cross preferentially. That is to say, a good proportion of the seedlings produced were hybrids.

One of the hybrids I made in 2006, between R.cautleyoides 'Yeti' and R.purpurea 'Brown Peacock'. I was hoping for more of the brown stem colour from the purpurea parent than shows here, but there are a number of seedlings still to flower.

Another seedling from 2006, but this time between R.cautleyoides 'Kew Beauty' and R.purpurea. I would like to say I had a plan when I made the hybrids, but it was mostly just opportunism. One of the seedlings had interesting variegated foliage.
