New to me this year, from Gary Dunlop at Ballyrogan Nurseries, this yellow flowered form has been delightful. Writing in 'The Plantsman' in 2012, Richard Wilford says: "This very attractive form has flowers of a similar pale yellow (2C) to those of R. forrestii. Apart from colour it is like f. humeana , with large, hooded flowers produced early in the season when the leaves are just emerging." Jill Cowley says: "The yellow form of the species (forma lutea), occurs sporadically in Yunnan in predominantly purple- or white-flowered poputions. However, in Sichuan, from where the plant illustrated here originates, it is the commonest form. ... The yellow form of Roscoea humeana was described as a new species, R. sichuanensis, by R. H. Miau in 1995 and a Joseph Rock specimen (no.23852), collected at Mount Siga in Sichuan, designated as the type. However, in the account of the genus for the Flora of China this has quite rightly been placed in synonymy under R. humeana by the authors, Wu Te-Lin and Kai Larsen." |
