Roscoea purpurea 'Cinnamon Stick'

A tall growing form with dark pseudostems and pale lilac and white flowers.
Paddock Plants say:

"The name Roscoea Cinnamon Stick only tells you about one of this plant’s key attractions - the fact that it has sturdy, almost cane-like stems, dark cinnamon red in colour - but misses out the second, namely, that, from mid to late summer, from the top of said sturdy stems sprout tongued orchid-like flowers of palest lilac shading sometimes to white. The flowers appear singly but keep on coming from the stem-top cluster and so provide a dramatic and long lasting display. It looks strange and exotic but is in fact entirely hardy, though it needs a soil that doesn’t get boggy in winter."

Introduced by Terra Nova Nurseries in the USA as part of their "Spice" series. Their catalogue entry says:

"Plucked from the Himalayas, this zone 6 ginger relative is a stunner in a pot or in a shady woodland garden. The blood red stems are striking all season and the large, orchid-like lavender flowers are showy in late summer. While not recommended for the hot and humid south, it makes a superb addition to many gardens."
