Roscoea purpurea 'Nico'

A large flowered form with green pseudostems. The mauve flowers are uniformly coloured but are slightly paler on the reverse of the hood. I got it from Cotswold Garden Flowers. Their description says:

"Exceptionally large deep purple flowers Jul-Sep, deep red-flushed and lined dark green foliage, thick reddish stems, compact plant only 20cm high. Easy."

Paul Cristian says in his 'Rare Plants' catalogue (1999):

"A strong growing purpurea form with a nicely poised flower held well above the leaves.
This has shorter growths than many but the flowers are larger and have a noticeably large lip that is some 6 cm long by 4.5 cm wide."

It was entered into the RHS trial (2008 - 2011) but it did not attract much attention although it grew well.

Jill Cowley says:

" 'Nico'. Green-stemmed and some 40cm tall. The flowers are larger than the Peacock Strain, with a labellum 5cm wide."
