Roscoea purpurea 'Peacock' is a spectacular plant. The rich green leaves contrast vividly with the deep brown red pseudostems. The large mauve flowers are produced from early August. Paul Christian (rareplants.co.uk) says: "This selection is 50-85 cm tall with large flowers, some 4 cm long by over 2 cm wide, in rich blue-violet. The lip is broad and crinkled and crisped in a most attractive fashion. This has very stout yet compact growths and makes a superb stocky, flower-covered clump. It has already received a special award from the KAVB in Holland, in 1998 and it represents what the raiser considers the best plant out of 1000’s of seedlings raised." Writing in the Journal of the AGS in 2008, Gary Dunlop says: "Several distinct cultivars were named by a Dutch grower, who was supplied with the tubers by collectors in India. They were released commercially by Dr. Paul Christian some years ago. The most distinctive is R. purpurea 'Brown Peacock' ...." The implication (just from the similarity of names) is that 'Peacock' is another of the group. |
