Roscoea purpurea 'Royal Purple'

A vigorous seedling raised by Robin White at Blackthorn Nursery. It has dark foliage, the flowers open purple and age to red. I bought it from Keith Wiley, his label says:

"Bright pinkish-purple flowersw in summer. Handsome foliage. Best in a cool spot in part shade. About 45cms high."

In the account of the AGS summer show mid west, Jo Walker wrote:

"A Certificate of Merit was given to the foregoing (Calochortus clavatus var. recurvifolius); another one went to the dark and mysterious Roscoea purpurea 'Royal Purple', bred and shown by Robin White of Blackthorn Nursery. This was exhibited out of flower, the wavy edged, richly coloured leaves putting on a fine show in their own right. A range of R. purpurea seedlings, some involving the much-celebrated R. purpurea 'Red Gurkha', have been trialled by the exhibitor, and selection of the most promising is ongoing for both flower and foliage. Stock of this new release on Robin's nursery stand sold out rapidly."

'Royal Purple' is a selection from a cross between 'Red Gurkha' and 'Brown Peacock'. As far as I have been able to ascertain this is the original clone. In recent years the Royal Purple Group have been distributed, similar dark purple leaved seedlings with red/purple flowers.
