Roscoea purpurea 'Shot Silk'

Archive entry 18.08.13

A magnificent, tall growing, purple leaved seedling raised by Paul Byfield while he was at Forde Abbey Nursery. It was one of the first hybrids that was circulated between 'Red Gurkha' and a dark leaved selection of R. purpurea. I got it from Paul Barney at Edulis from vegetatively propagated stock before it got a name. I used to refer to it as "purple leaved red" but it has since been named 'Shot Silk'. Unfortunately Roscoea are quite slow to propagate by division and a Shot Silk Group of seedlings is now being circulated with dark leaves and red or red-purple flowers.
'Shot Silk' has flowers that open purple-mauve and pass through mulberry before becoming salmon-red.
