A tall, dark leaved selection with pale lavender-pink flowers. Ballyrobert Gardens say: "Roscoea purpurea 'Spice Island' is a 2012 introduction from Janet Egger at Terra Nova nurseries. This hardy ginger has dark leaves with deep red backs. It forms clumps with showy thick, deep red stems. 'Spice Island' has lavender purple, orchid-like flowers on the top of the stalks in mid summer. It can be used as a tropical element or in mixed shade beds. Also not a bad container plant." The Terra Nova website says: "Here's a tropical appearing accent plant from the land of the Yeti! In mid summer, this hardy ginger has pink flowers that resemble orchids with a crepe-ruffle. Showy thick, deep red stems support luscious dark leaves with deep red backs. It makes a unusual woodland companion for Trilliums or used as a container specimen. Compared to 'Brown Peacock' it is taller and has larger, broader leaves with thicker and red stems as well as a good crown number. Compared to 'Cinnamon Spice' it has dark foliage." |
