Roscoea purpurea 'Vincent'

Roscoea purpurea 'Vincent' is another form selected for its size and late flower, said to continue flowering until the first frosts. My plant has been a fairly average form of R.purpurea, which flowered only briefly. As the picture shows , it has rather ordinary flowers.

I got it from Long Acre Plants, their label says:

"A tall cultivar with very large purple flowers in August."

Paul Christian says in his 2005 catalogue:

"A tall and strong plant which flowers over a very long period, beginning at the normal time but continuing, on and off, with its strong purple-violet flowers, until the first frosts remove all of the top growth."
Excellent for prolonging the Roscoea season."

Digging Dog Nursey say:

"Celebrated for its mighty stalks plus marvelous long-lasting floral display that often extends through September, ′Vincent′s sizable violet flowers are heightened by prominent drooping lower lobes, luminous milky streaks and a mulberry-infused base. Large tapered dark green leaves firmly envelop the upright stems, forging a lush wavy base with a gleaming finish. Lovers of light shade and superb winter drainage, this bushy clump-forming perennial lends late season intrigue to woodland niches, "
