Roscoea sinopurpurea

Roscoea sinopurpurea is a recent acquisition from Paul Christian. Roscoea sinopurpurea is an old name that has been absorbed within Roscoea cautleyoides in recent years, however it seemed worth growing to see what came up. Said to be purple flowered, but in the first year all that has come up are some leaves.

Paul Christian's catalogue says:

"This is a name first used by Otto Stapf in the 19th century, but one which barely gets a mention in current treatments where it seems relegated to partial synonymy in cautleyoides. Whatever its affinities it is purple, (not yellow) on slender graceful stems which carry one to several flowers with broad lips, in summer."

Writing in the Bulletin of the Alpine Garden Society (1940), Edward Lyttel says:

"R. sinopurpurea: collected by Forrest, appears from herbarium specimens to be a beautiful plant, but is apparently not yet in cultivation."
