Roscoea x beesiana is a variable hybrid between Roscoea cautleyoides and R.auriculata. I grow a few different forms, but a much greater range of colour could be achieved than is currently
available. Typically, plants in cultivation are creamy yellow. Christopher Whitehouse and Jill Cowley say, writing in The Plantsman: "The origin of Roscoea x beesiana is unfortunately obscure. The epithet implies that it was raised at Bees ltd, the nursery in Cheshire founded by the renowned plantsman Arthur K. Bulley (1861-1942). However the first mention of the plant in literature is not until, a letter was sent from Norman Hart of Uckfield, Sussex, to the Gardeners Chronicle in 1970, long after the heyday of Bulley's Nursery... the parent species were present on the nursery, but if the hybrid was raised there, it was never grown in sufficient quantity to be offered in its catalogue. Roscoea x beesiana is most easily recognised in cultivation by the presence of purple-streaking on the otherwise pale yellow or even white flowers." |
