A variegated sage with yellow and green leaves. I grew it for a short time, as much for the kitchen as anything else. It would probably do well in a sunny
vegetable garden here but I don't have such a thing. I have nothing useful to add, I have been unable to find out anything about the cultivars history, but John Sutton say: "'Icterina' AGM seldom flowers, but is valued for its green and god foliage. Basically, the central area of the leaf is green, and a broad margin pale golden-yellow, but the proportions and patterns of the two colours vary widely from leaf to leaf. The plant is lower growing and less robust than the grey-green leaved cultivars." The cultivar 'Kew Gold' is a sport from it. Trees and Shrubs online says: "Leaves variegated with yellow and light green (S. off. icterina Alefeld, possibly a misprint for icterica – jaundiced)." Which may be an indication of how much people hate variegated plants. |
