Sanicula epipacts 'Thor'

Archive entry 29.03.15

The variegated form is a bit of an odd thing. I rather like it, but it is a bit 'busy' when planted out. Very slow to propagate, I have a small piece and it has been planted in the woods where it has a decent chance of survival. Once I discovered the rabbits were eating it I moved 'Thor' into the shade garden, protected by a rabbit fence. For the first time it has looked vigorous and still has leaves in June, something I have never seen before.

I bought it from Little Heath Farm Nursery, their label says:

"A clump-forming perennial with glossy bright green leaves edged white and tiny yellow flowers surrounded by variegated bracts. Height 15cm. Moist well-drained soil in part shade. Feb-Mar."

Writing in 'The Plantsman' in 2008, Tim Ingram says:

"The variegated cultivar, known as 'Thor', which has been grown more widely in Scandanavia than elsewhere, is a beautiful plant but slow and difficult to divide, even though relatively easy to grow once obtained. In this, the leaves and floral bracts are widely edged in white and the ground colour of the leaf is distinctly blue-green compared with the apple-green of the type plant."
